Our Story Books This Term

                                      This Autumn term our topic is 'Through the Story Book'

We have begun the year with a wonderful book about Kindness. The book title is 'The Smartest Giant in Town' and it is written by Julia Donaldson. We have begun reading the story in class and talking about the kind actions performed by the Giant. We have discussed how we can be kind to all others in class, especially through the kind actions we perform and through the kind things we express or say. We will discuss and explore our own feelings, emotions and facial expressions and relate these to aspects of the characters in the storybook.  

The following are additional books we will read this term with a focus on 'Hope', 'Self Regulation' and 'Bravery'.             

                                

Bae Un Weekly Reminders

Reading (Reception only : Allocated reading days) 

Reception pupils will read an Oxford Reading Tree book with an adult in class each week. They will also be given a Big Cat reading book to enjoy for the week at home. It is important for your child's progress that there is continual communication between home and school. Please listen to your child read on a regular basis and comment in their reading record each time. You will find your child's reading day written at the top of their reading record book. Please ensure that your child returns to school their Oxford Reading Tree Book, Big Cat Book and reading record on their allocated day. 

Individual reading words and 'Tricky' words will be sent home on flashcards to learn. Please also practise these as much as you can with your child.

A  reading folder will be provided for your child to use to support the carrying of their  reading books, reading record and flashcards to and from school. Please use this on their allocated reading day. 

Outdoor Learning - Tuesday ( Reception only)

Please bring your wellies and a waterproof coat to school for outdoor learning in the afternoon. This session will take place whatever the weather. 

Physical Education - Friday

Bae Un will be taking part in PE on a Friday morning. Your child should wear comfortable PE clothing to school on this day. They will not need a change of clothing. Suitable clothing and footwear for your child should include joggers, T- shirt and or jumper and trainers. 

Going Home Folders -  Friday 

Your child will bring a folder home on a Friday containing their completed activities for that week such as paintings, cut and stick creations, handwriting and name writing activities etc. These creations are for you to enjoy and keep at home. The empty folder should be returned to Bae Un on the following Monday. 

An activity may also be included in the folder for you to complete at home. This activity would complement the learning which has taken place that week in class.

Dough Disco is a great way to develop muscles in your children's hands and fingers to promote early writing. Our children love this activity and we usually do this 3 times a week.

                                           Squiggle while you Wiggle

Squiggle While You Wiggle is a kinaesthetic approach to stimulate early writing. Children use movement with music to develop their motor skills in preparation for writing. Through Squiggle While You Wiggle, children begin using ‘flappers’ to rehearse a range of shapes, which lead to children mark-making with chunky pens, in preparation for more formal writing. We usually practise this twice a week
Usual movements we’ve been working on in school are up and down, side to side and circles. As we practise cursive writing I’ve introduced a new movement which we call ‘up the hill’. You must ensure this movement starts low on YOUR left side and rises up to your RIGHT side. This is to support the entry stroke to cursive writing. You can use a pair of socks to swing around if you haven’t got 2 pieces of material

Play Dough Recipe 

This is one of the recipes we use for our play dough in school. You can even add glitter or scented food oils to enhance the sensory aspect!
2 cups plain flour
2 tbsp vegetable oil/baby oil
½ cup salt
2 tbsp cream of tartar
1 to 1 ½ cups boiling water (adding in increments until it feels just right)
Food colouring (optional)

• Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil in a large mixing bowl
• Add food colouring to the boiling water then into the dry ingredients
• Stir continuously until it becomes a sticky, combined dough
• Allow it to cool down then take it out of the bowl and knead it vigorously for a couple of minutes until all of the stickiness has gone
• If it remains a little sticky then add a touch more flour until just right
